Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms
From 907 to 979, this was a major period of fragmentation in Chinese history. The term comes from the "New History of the Five Dynasties" and refers to the combined era of the Five Dynasties (907-960) and the Ten Kingdoms (902-979). The Five Dynasties were five successive regimes in the Central Plains: Later Liang, Later Tang, Later Jin, Later Han, and Later Zhou. The Ten Kingdoms were ten regimes established in the south: Wu, Southern Tang, Wuyue, Min, Southern Han, Former Shu, Later Shu, Chu, Southern Ping, and Northern Han.
