Southern and Northern Dynasties

Southern and Northern Dynasties

From 420 to 589 AD, this period is collectively known as the Southern and Northern Dynasties. The Southern and Northern Dynasties era was a time of great division in Chinese history, as well as a period of significant ethnic integration, succeeding the Eastern Jin and Sixteen Kingdoms and preceding the Sui Dynasty, beginning with Liu Yu's usurpation of the Eastern Jin to establish the Liu Song dynasty in 420 AD and ending with the Sui Dynasty's conquest of the Chen dynasty in 589 AD.
