The Carter

A cunning wolf exploits a carter's helplessness during a grueling uphill haul, biting his flesh as he strains to save his load.

Original Text

A carter was hauling a very heavy load up a slope, straining with all his might, when a wolf came and bit him on the buttock. If he let go, the goods would be ruined and he himself would be crushed beneath the cart, so he had to endure the pain and continue pushing. Once the cart reached the top of the slope, the wolf had already torn off a piece of flesh and fled. Taking advantage of the carter's helplessness, the wolf stole a morsel of his flesh to eat—a cunning and laughable trick indeed.

Commentary

This is a cold joke between a wolf and a man. The wolf, taking advantage of the man's distraction or helplessness, seizes the opportunity to exploit him, showing extreme cunning. Though the tale speaks of man and wolf, such situations often mirror the complexities of human relationships and worldly affairs.
