Medicinal Properties

This product is mostly found in massive aggregates. It appears as irregular blocks, white, yellowish-white, or pale blue-gray in color, with a waxy luster. The texture is soft and fine, with a slippery feel when touched, no hygroscopicity, and does not disintegrate when placed in water. Odor: faint; Taste: bland.

Chemical Constituents

The main ingredient is hydrous magnesium silicate, in addition, it also contains aluminum oxide, among others.

Pharmacology

Applied to the skin, it makes the skin smooth and dry; when used externally on damaged or inflamed skin, it can adsorb chemical irritants or toxins, providing a protective effect. However, when applied to the rectum, vagina, or wound surfaces, it may cause granulomas, so it should not be sprinkled on wounds or taken internally. In vitro, it has inhibitory effects on Salmonella typhi and Salmonella paratyphi A.

Sweet and bland, cold in nature. Enters the Bladder, Lung, and Stomach channels.

Functions and Indications

Diuresis and unblocks painful urinary dribbling, clears Heat and resolves Summerheat; for external use, eliminates Dampness and astringes sores. Used for Heat stranguria, stone stranguria, hot and painful urination with difficulty, Summerheat-Dampness with vexation and thirst, Dampness-Heat watery diarrhea; externally treat eczema, Damp sores, and prickly heat.

Dosage and Administration

Oral administration: decoct 9-24 g, wrapped in cloth for decoction; or made into pills or powder. External use: appropriate amount, ground into powder and sprinkled; or mixed for application.

Precautions and Contraindications

Contraindicated in cases of Spleen and Stomach weakness, or fluid injury due to febrile disease, or Kidney deficiency with spermatorrhea. Use with caution during pregnancy.

Prescriptions

1. For dysuria with penile pain and lower abdominal cramping: equal parts Huashi and Puhuang, grind the two ingredients into a powder. Take 2 g with wine, three times daily. (from Qianjin Yaofang) 2. For turbid urine resembling oil: Gancao 9 g, Huashi 60 g, Haijinsha 24 g. Grind into powder, take 6 g per dose, mixed with Maidong decoction. (from Xianxi Danfang Xuan) 3. For dysuria: Huashi 30 g, sweet Tinglizi (stir-fried over paper until purple) 30 g. Grind the ingredients into a fine powder, take 6 g with warm water at any time, take frequently until urination is restored. (from Shenghui Fang, Huashi San) 4. For summerheat with vexatious thirst, excessive drinking, dysuria, and mental agitation: Chensha 9 g, Huashi 180 g, Gancao 30 g. Grind into fine powder, take 9 g per dose at any time, mixed with boiling water. (from Qixiao Liangfang, Chensha Yiyuan San) 5. For pediatric heat-induced prickly heat: Huashi powder 90 g, Baifan ash 30 g, Zhaoye 120 g. Grind the ingredients into powder. First wash the sores with warm rice-wash water, then apply the powder. (from Shenghui Fang, Huashi San) 6. For facial acne in women: Huashi 15 g, Huangla 3 g, Badou five pieces. Grind each into fine powder, use a small amount to wash the face as usual. (from Puji Fang) 7. For oral ulcers: Huashi and Danfan each 30 g. Grind the two ingredients into a powder, use 3 g wrapped in cotton, hold in the mouth, and swallow the saliva.
