Botanical Description
Saprophytic fungus, sclerotium usually irregularly spherical, ovoid, or lump-shaped, diameter 0.8-3.5 cm, rarely up to 4 cm, surface brown, dark brown to black, with fine dense wrinkles, interior white to waxy white, slightly sticky. Fruiting body rarely visible.
Habitat and Distribution
Mostly grows under bamboo forests, on bamboo roots or under old bamboo clumps. Distributed in Henan, Shaanxi, Gansu, Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang, Fujian, Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Sichuan, Guizhou, and Yunnan.
Harvesting and Processing
Harvested in autumn. Wash clean and sun-dry.
Medicinal Properties
This product is in the form of spherical or irregular lumps, 1-3 cm in diameter. The surface is blackish-brown or brownish-brown, with slightly raised, irregular, fine reticulate striations. The texture is firm and not easily broken; the fracture surface is uneven, white or pale grayish-yellow, often with yellowish-white marble-like markings. Odor: faint; Taste: slightly bitter, with a granular sensation when chewed, slightly sticky, and no residue after prolonged chewing. Those with a brown, horn-like fracture surface are not to be used medicinally.
Chemical Constituents
This product mainly contains Omphalin.
Pharmacology
Has a vermifuge effect against tapeworms, and also has significant effects against roundworms and hookworms. It also enhances immunity and has anti-cancer effects.

Prescriptions
1. For Taenia (tapeworm): Take Leiwan (Omphalia) alone. Soak in water until soft, peel, slice, and dry-roast to a powder. When ill, just before dawn first eat a small piece of roasted meat, then mix 1.5 g of the powder with thin congee and take. ("Jingyan Qianfang") 2. For three types of worms: Leiwan (Omphalia, processed) 30 g, Chuanxiong (Ligusticum chuanxiong) 30 g. Grind the two ingredients into a fine powder. Take 3 g each time, on an empty stomach, mixed with millet congee, and take again at noon and near evening. ("Shengji Zonglu" Leiwan Powder) 3. To eliminate infantile malnutrition and kill worms: Leiwan (Omphalia), Shijunzi (Quisqualis, processed, shell removed), Heshi (Carpesium), Feizi (Torreya, kernel), and Binglang (Areca catechu), equal parts. Grind to a fine powder. Take 3 g each time, mixed with warm millet congee, before feeding. ("Yangshi Jiacang Fang" Leiwan Powder) 4. For roundworm and pinworm: Leiwan (Omphalia) and Cangzhu (Atractylodes), equal parts, dry-roast over low heat, then grind to powder. Fry one egg in sesame oil, place 3-6 g of the powder in the center of the egg, and eat. Adults take 2-3 eggs each time, children take 1-2 eggs each time, for 3 consecutive days. ("Zhongguo Yaoyong Zhenjun") 5. For taeniasis: Leiwan (Omphalia) 15 g, Erchou (Pharbitis) 6 g, Binglang (Areca catechu) 63 g. First decoct the last two ingredients twice, combine the decoctions, then add the Leiwan powder. Take once in the morning. Reduce dosage for children. ("Zhongguo Yaoyong Zhenjun") 6. For infantile chills and fever, fright and restlessness: Leiwan (Omphalia) 0.9 g, Muli (Ostrea) 0.9 g, Huangqin (Scutellaria) 0.9 g, Xixin (Asarum) 0.9 g, Shechuangzi (Cnidium) 30 g. Boil the above ingredients in 10 sheng of water until reduced to 7 sheng, strain, divide into two portions, and use at a suitable temperature. First bathe the child's head, taking care not to let water enter the ears or eyes; then bathe the back and shoulders; finally bathe the area below the waist.
