Harvesting and Processing

Take fresh bamboo stems, cut into 30-50 cm long sections, remove the nodes at both ends, split them open, suspend them over a fire, heat the middle section, and collect the liquid that flows from both ends in a container.

Medicinal Properties

This product is a transparent liquid, greenish-yellow or yellowish-brown in color, with a bamboo-like aroma and a slightly sweet taste.

Chemical Constituents

Contains aspartic acid, methionine, serine, proline and other amino acids, as well as salicylic acid, trace elements and other components.

Pharmacology

Has antitussive and expectorant effects.

Properties and Channel Entry

Sweet and bitter, cold. Enters the Heart, Liver, and Lung channels.

Functions and Indications

Clears Heat and descends Fire, transforms Phlegm and opens the orifices

Dosage and Administration

Oral administration: Infusion, 30-60 g; or in pill form, or decocted into a paste. External use: Appropriate amount, apply as a compress or use as eye drops.

Precautions and Contraindications

Contraindicated in cases of cold fluid retention, damp phlegm, and Spleen deficiency with loose stools.

Prescriptions

1. For lung abscess: Zhuli (bamboo sap) 60 g, take in 3 divided doses, rinsed down with warm boiled water. (from *Anhui Chinese Herbal Medicine*) 2. For infantile delirium, occurring after nightfall: Take 40 ml of Zhuli orally. (from *Zhibao Fang*) 3. For infantile lip sores: Mix Zhuli with Huanglian (Coptis chinensis), Huangbai (Phellodendron amurense), and Huangdan (lead oxide), and apply externally. (from *Quanyou Xinjian*) 4. For infantile red eyes: Apply Zhuli as eye drops, or mix with human milk. (from *Gujin Luyan Fang*) 5. For tetanus from metal-inflicted wounds, with lockjaw and impending death: Take approximately 100 ml of Zhuli, gently warm it, and administer orally. (from *Guangli Fang*)
