Medicinal Properties

This product is a white crystalline powder or flaky crystal. Odor: aromatic; Taste: pungent and cool. It is volatile and produces thick smoke when ignited. The flame is yellow.

Chemical Constituents

This product mainly contains dextroborneol.

Pharmacology

Can inhibit the central nervous system, manifesting as significant sedative and analgesic effects, and promote the growth and division of glial cells; has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antifertility effects, and can interact with other drugs such as tetramethylpyrazine and salicylic acid.

Properties and Channel Entry

Acrid, bitter, cool. Enters the Heart, Spleen, and Lung channels.

Functions and Indications

Opens the orifices, revives the spirit, clears Heat, and alleviates pain. Used for febrile disease with loss of consciousness and convulsions, Wind-stroke with Phlegm-induced syncope, sudden collapse due to Qi depression, foul-attack coma, chest Bi with cardiac pain, red eyes, mouth sores, swollen and painful throat, and purulent discharge from the ear canal.

Dosage and Administration

Internal use: 0.15-0.3 g in pill or powder form, not for decoction. External use: appropriate amount, grind into powder and sprinkle, or insufflate, apply, or mix for topical application.

Precautions and Contraindications

Pregnant women and those with Qi and Blood deficiency should use with caution.

Prescriptions

1. For headache: Longnao 3 g, wrap in paper to form a twist, burn and smoke the nose to induce sputum discharge, and recovery follows. (From *Shou Yu Shen Fang*) 2. For corneal opacity: Longnao 3 g, Chuanpuxiao 15 g. Grind both ingredients into a fine powder. Use a copper probe to take a dose the size of a soybean and apply it to the eye. (From *Sheng Hui Fang*) 3. For wind-heat throat obstruction: Dengxincao 3 g, Huangbai (burned to preserve property) 1.5 g, Baifan (calcined) 2.1 g, Bingpiannao 0.9 g. Grind into powder. Blow 0.3-0.6 g into the affected area each time. (From *Bin Hu Ji Jian Fang*) 4. For mouth sores and dry throat: Longnao 9 g, Huangbai 90 g. Make into honey pills the size of wutong seeds. Take ten pills with Maimendong decoction each time. (From *Zhai Xuan Fang*) 5. For dysentery with anal swelling like hemorrhoids: Grind Bingpian into powder, mix with milk, and apply externally. (From *Shen Zhai Yi Shu*) 6. For prickly heat sores: Longnao (ground) 0.3 g, Huangbai (powdered) 15 g, Baifan 60 g, Lacha (powdered) 30 g. Mix evenly. Use fresh cotton to dab the powder and apply to the affected area. For broken sores, spread directly. (From *Xiao Er Wei Sheng Zong Wei Lun Fang*) 7. For internal and external hemorrhoids: Longnao 0.3-0.6 g. Dissolve in scallion juice and apply externally. (From *Jian Bian Dan Fang*)
