遥遥华胄 (Distant Noble Ancestry)

During the Southern Dynasties, a young man named He Changyu stood apart from the idle sons of officials, choosing instead to befriend only the most upright and respected scholars of his time. Known for his quiet integrity and refined character, he earned such widespread acclaim that the imperial court eventually appointed him Minister of Personnel, overseeing the appointment and promotion of officials across the land.

One day, He Changyu was chatting with guests in his living room. A richly dressed young stranger arrived carrying a large bag. Upon seeing He Changyu, he bowed deeply. He Changyu returned the courtesy modestly, saying, "Young man, no need for such formalities. Any visitor is a guest—please, rise quickly!"

The young man sat down, and a servant brought fragrant tea. Beaming, he pulled a pile of gifts from his bag and presented them with both hands.

He Changyu said with displeasure, "You are a scholar—have you never heard the story of Ziyu refusing gifts? A gentleman's friendship is as pure as water. Please take your things back!"

The young man looked embarrassed and slunk back to his original seat.

He Changyu asked, "May I ask what business you have with me?" The young man sat upright, forced a smile, and replied, "I am here on my father's orders to seek an official position from you, Your Excellency."

He Changyu took a sip of tea, cleared his throat, and said, "Since ancient times, selecting officials has mostly required assessments; only those with both virtue and talent can be appointed. Moreover, the right person must be chosen according to the rank of the position—how can one choose the position for oneself?"

The young man’s face flushed crimson, and he lowered his head.

He Changyu added, "Besides, we've never met before. I know nothing about your situation—how could I recklessly recommend you?" The young man lifted his head, eyes gleaming, and said, "Your Excellency, my humble surname is Min. I am a descendant of Ziqian!"

He Changyu covered his face with a round fan, pursed his lips and smiled, then turned to the others and said:

"Remote and noble lineage!" Later, the idiom "remote and noble lineage" came to refer to descendants of famous people from distant ages.
