During the Chu-Han conflict, after the brilliant military strategist Han Xin was appointed King of Qi by Liu Bang, he led his troops to capture Longju City in a single swift campaign. Xiang Yu, deeply alarmed, sent a man named Wu She to persuade Han Xin to defect to Chu. Wu She argued, "You think you are safe with Liu Bang, but once the world is settled, he will turn on you. Join us, and you can share the realm." Han Xin replied, "I owe everything to the King of Han—he gave me command and trust. To betray him would be dishonorable. I will not change sides."
Wu She advised Han Xin, "You and Xiang Yu have always been allies. Why not turn against the King of Han, join forces with Chu, and later divide the realm into three kingdoms, ruling as king yourself?"
Han Xin explained, "When I served the King of Chu, my highest rank was no more than a palace guard with a spear. My words went unheard, my strategies unused—that's why I defected to the Han King. He appointed me Supreme General, placed tens of thousands of elite troops under my command, gave me his own clothes to wear and his own food to eat, and heeded every word I spoke. That's how I reached my current position. To betray such a lord would be unlucky. Even facing death, I would never waver."
"Jie Yi" means taking off one's clothes; "Tui Shi" means offering food. The idiom "Jie Yi Tui Shi" describes being extremely generous and caring towards others.
