Youchao built nests in trees

Youchao Shi is the legendary figure from ancient times who invented nest dwellings, also known as "Dachao Shi."

In ancient times, there were many wild beasts and few humans; people had no fixed dwellings and were constantly attacked by animals, living in constant fear of death. Seeing that some animals lived in caves, they imitated them and began dwelling in caves to shelter from wind, rain, and the assaults of wild beasts.

However, the cave was damp and cold, and from time to time it was still vulnerable to attacks from wild beasts. Just then, a sage appeared. Legend has it that he was born in Cangwu, south of the Jiuyi Mountains, and once traveled to a sacred mountain, where he received enlightenment from an immortal, making his wisdom far beyond that of ordinary people. Seeing that birds built their nests in trees, which provided shelter from wind and rain while keeping them safe from wild beasts, he found this very clever. Inspired by this, he selected a tall tree and built a house on it using branches and vines. This house was shielded by the tree's foliage, unaffected by wind and rain, and because it was high up, out of reach of wild beasts, there was no need to worry about safety. When others saw this, they were overjoyed and followed his example, building houses in the trees.

From then on, people collected plant seeds and wild fruits during the day and slept in trees at night, no longer having to fear sudden attacks from wild beasts. The invention of nesting allowed people to live without constant worry. To express their gratitude to the inventor, they elected him as the leader of their tribe and respectfully called him Youchao Shi (the Nest Builder). After becoming the tribal leader, Youchao Shi actively did good deeds for everyone, earning great praise and quickly becoming famous far and wide. Other tribes, recognizing his virtue and talent, unanimously elected him as the supreme leader and honored him with the title "Nest Emperor." Thus, in folk legends, there is a belief that Youchao Shi was one of the "Three Sovereigns," the ancient sages of high antiquity.

Of course, leading the ancient people to build nests as dwellings, enabling them to live in peace and have homes, was the greatest achievement of the Nest Builder. In pre-Qin ancient texts, the record about the Nest Builder goes as follows: "In the earliest times, there were few people but many birds and beasts, and the people could not overcome the birds, beasts, insects, and snakes. Then a sage arose, who built nests from wood to avoid these various harms, and the people were delighted with him, making him king over the world, and calling him the Nest Builder." (Han Feizi: The Five Vermin)

The title "Youchao Shi" was posthumously given by later generations based on legend to the first person who built a house in a tree; he is a legendary figure, a fictional creation of later people. From this simple name, he was no longer a supernatural deity but an ordinary person who made history. In reality, Youchao Shi represents a stage in human development from cave dwelling to nest dwelling, marking the progress of primitive society, but its greater significance lies in symbolizing the glorious historical process of our ancestors persevering in their struggle for survival.

The transition from living in caves to building nests marked a major step forward in human civilization. Youchao Shi lived in the distant Neolithic Age, when human society had already developed into the stage of matriarchal clan communes. This change in living arrangements also transformed human marriage practices. People no longer lived together in caves, which helped prevent intermarriage among close relatives. Gradually, marriage within the same clan was forbidden, and both men and women had to seek spouses outside their own clans. This form of exogamy was clearly more advanced than blood-related marriage. In the history of Chinese civilization, it was Youchao Shi who led our ancestors to take another step that distinguished humans from animals.
