Zifu Jingbo

Zifu Jingbo (also known as He, styled Jingbo), with unknown birth and death dates, was a noble of the State of Lu during the late Spring and Autumn Period. He is mentioned twice in The Analects: once when Gongbo Liao slandered Zi Lu (a disciple of Confucius) before Ji Sun, Zifu Jingbo reported this to Confucius and offered to eliminate Gongbo Liao, but Confucius stopped him. Another time when Shusun Wushu told officials at court that Zi Gong (a wealthy and eloquent disciple) was more worthy than Confucius, Zifu Jingbo informed Zi Gong. Thus, Zifu Jingbo was a high official of Lu with close ties to Confucius and his disciples. The Zuozhuan records that in the third year of Duke Ai of Lu (492 BCE), when the temples of Duke Huan and Duke Xi of Lu caught fire, he participated in firefighting. In the seventh year of Duke Ai (488 BCE), when Wu and Lu held a covenant at Zeng (northwest of modern Cangshan, Shandong), the King of Wu demanded one hundred sacrificial animals from Lu, and Zifu Jingbo argued vigorously but failed. In the thirteenth year of Duke Ai (482 BCE), when Wu, Lu, Jin, and the Zhou royal house met at Huangchi (southwest of modern Fengqiu, Henan), he was imprisoned by Wu for opposing the King of Wu leading Duke Ai to pay homage to the Marquis of Jin, but was later released due to his eloquent speech. In the fifteenth year of Duke Ai (480 BCE), he went on a diplomatic mission to Qi with Zi Gong (Confucius's disciple).
