Harvesting and Processing

Place the honeycomb in water, heat, filter, cool to condense, and collect the wax, or further refine it.

Medicinal Properties

This product consists of irregular lumps of varying sizes. They are yellow, pale yellowish-brown, or yellowish-white, opaque or slightly translucent, with a smooth surface. The texture is relatively light and waxy, with a granular cross-section that softens when rubbed or kneaded. It has a honey-like aroma and a slightly sweet taste.

Chemical Constituents

This product contains chemical components such as resins, free acids, free alcohols, and hydrocarbons. The main constituents include myricyl palmitate, myricyl cerotate, cerotic acid, melissic acid, and melene.

Pharmacology

Has active oxygen scavenging effects, and also has antibacterial, antiseptic, and other effects.

Properties and Channel Entry

Sweet, slightly warm. Enters the Spleen channel.

Functions and Indications

Detoxifies, closes sores, generates tissue, and alleviates pain. External use for non-healing ulcers, chronic leg ulcers with erosion, traumatic wounds and ulcerations, and burns and scalds.

Dosage and Administration

Internal use: dissolve and take orally, 5-10 g; or use in pill form. External use: appropriate amount, dissolve and apply as a compress.

Prescriptions

1. For chronic leg ulcers, incised wounds, and burns: Huangla (yellow wax) 30 g, Xiangyou (sesame oil) 60 g, Huangdan (red lead) 15 g. Melt together, allow to cool, and store in a bottle. Apply topically by spreading on a cloth and adhering to the affected area. (Wang Zhongmian's Empirical Formula) 2. For threatened miscarriage with abdominal pain and vaginal bleeding during pregnancy: Fengla (beeswax) 3 g, boil in two cups of clear wine for a few rolls, then add the wax to dissolve. Take in one dose. (Shengji Zonglu, Wax Wine Formula) 3. For deafness due to deficiency: Baifuling (white Poria) 60 g, Shanyao (Dioscorea, stir-fried) 90 g, Xingren (apricot kernel, peeled and tip removed, stir-fried) 45 g, Huangla (yellow wax) 60 g. Grind the first three ingredients into a fine powder, mix well. Melt the wax and form into pills the size of an elastic ball. Chew and swallow with salted water. (Sanyin Fang, Wax Pill Formula) 4. For injuries from beatings or falls: Jingjie (Schizonepeta) 15 g, Huangla (yellow wax) 15 g, Yubiao (fish bladder, stir-fried until yellow) 15 g, Aiye (mugwort leaf) three pieces. Add to one bowl of ash-free wine and simmer over double-boiled water for the duration of one incense stick. Drink while hot. (Yaolong Xiaopin) 5. For chapped and painful hands in winter: Zhuyou (lard) 120 g, Baila (white wax) 60 g (melt, then remove from heat and add), Baizhi (Angelica dahurica) 3 g, Shengma (Cimicifuga) 3 g, Zhuyacao (Gleditsia sinensis) 3 g, Dingxiang (clove) 1.5 g, Shexiang (musk) 0.6 g. Grind the above into a fine powder and mix into the oil and wax. First, wash the hands with scallion water, dry thoroughly, and warm the hands over a fire. Take a piece of the ointment and rub it into the palm until the hand becomes oily. Remove any excess, then warm and rub the hand over the fire until the oil is absorbed. (Waike Dacheng, Non-Chapped Hand Ointment) 6. For scalds and burns with redness, heat, pain, toxin festering into pus: to draw out toxin, relieve pain, and close the wound: Mayou (sesame oil) 120 g, Danggui (Angelica sinensis) 30 g. Fry until the Danggui is scorched, then remove the dregs. Add Huangla (yellow wax) 30 g, stir to melt, allow to cool. Spread on a cloth and apply. (Yilin Jiyao) 7. For red and white dysentery with unbearable lower abdominal pain, tenesmus, and bluish complexion and extremities: Huangla (yellow wax) 9 g, Ejiao (ass-hide gelatin) 9 g. Melt together, then add Huanglian (Coptis) powder 15 g and mix well. Divide into three doses and take while hot. (Jinkui Yaolue, Qi-regulating Decoction)
