Distribution
Distributed in most regions of China. Mainly produced in Henan, Anhui, Jiangsu, Hunan, Guizhou, Guangxi and other places.
Harvesting and Processing
Captured in summer and autumn, suffocated or scalded to death, then dried in the sun.
Medicinal Properties
1. Southern large blister beetle: oblong in shape, 1.5-2.5 cm long, 0.5-1 cm wide. The head and mouthparts hang downward, with one pair of large compound eyes and one pair of antennae. The antennae are mostly shed. There is one pair of leathery wing cases on the back, black in color, with three yellow or brownish-yellow transverse stripes; beneath the wing cases are two pieces of brownish, membranous, transparent inner wings. The thorax and abdomen are black, with three pairs of legs on the thorax. It has a distinctive odor.
2. Huanghei Xiaobanmao (Small Black-and-Yellow Blister Beetle): body smaller, length 1-1.5 cm.
Chemical Constituents
This product primarily contains cantharidin, fats, and resins.
Pharmacology
It has anti-tumor effects; by stimulating DNA synthesis in bone marrow cells, it can increase white blood cell count and enhance the body's immune function; it possesses significant anti-inflammatory effects; it has antiviral and antibacterial effects; it has pro-estrogenic effects and also has certain estrogen-like effects; it also has local irritant and other effects.
Properties and Channel Entry
Acrid, hot; highly toxic. Enters the Liver, Stomach, and Kidney channels.
Functions and Indications
Breaks Blood and expels stasis, disperses clumping and eliminates concretions, attacks toxicity and erodes sores. Used for abdominal masses, amenorrhea, stubborn tinea, warts, non-suppurating carbuncles, malignant sores with necrotic tissue.
Dosage and Administration
Internal use: roast and grind into powder, 0.03-0.06 g per dose; after processing, mostly used in pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount, grind into powder or soak in wine or vinegar, or prepare as an ointment to apply to the affected area; not suitable for large-area use.
Precautions and Contraindications
This product is highly toxic and should be used with caution for internal administration; it is contraindicated in individuals with weak constitution, cardiac or renal insufficiency, gastrointestinal ulcers, and pregnant women.
Prescriptions
1. For scrofula and tuberculosis: Banmao (Mylabris) 1 piece, Heidou (black soybean) 7 pieces (sprouted). Grind together into pills the size of mung beans. Take five pills with tea. For children, one pill. (Da Xiao Wan from Sheng Ji Zong Lu) 2. For warts and moles: Banmao 3 pieces, stir-fry with 15 g glutinous rice until yellow, remove the rice. Add 1 clove of garlic, mash and apply to the lesion. (Gang Mu) 3. For acute heart pain: Banmao 7 pieces, Hujiao (black pepper) 49 grains. Stir-fry together until Banmao is scorched and broken, discard Banmao, take the pure pepper powder. Take as one dose, adjust with hot wine, regardless of time. (Wei Sheng Yi Jian Fang) 4. For facial nerve paralysis: Banmao 1 piece. Grind into fine powder. Mix with water and apply to the cheek area; apply to the right side if the mouth is pulled to the left, and to the left side if pulled to the right. Remove the medicine once blisters form. (Shandong Zhong Cao Yao Shou Ce) 5. For malaria: Banmao 7 pieces, Mahuang (Ephedra) and Xiongjing (realgar) 3.6 g each, Zhusha (cinnabar) 1.5 g. Grind together into fine powder. Use 0.3-0.9 g daily, mix into a plaster, and apply to the 2nd cervical vertebra. (Zhejiang Zhong Yi Za Zhi 1959, (7): 39) 6. For lumbago and leg pain: Dry Banmao in an oven, grind into powder. Take a piece the size of a match head, press it onto the most painful point on the body surface, secure with adhesive tape. After 5-6 hours, a blister the size of a broad bean will form. Remove the medicine after 24 hours, puncture the blister to drain fluid, apply gentian violet. Repeat if not healed. (Quan Guo Zhong Cao Yao Hui Bian) 7. For one-sided headache (migraine): Banmao 1 piece, remove the head, wings, and legs, grind fine over paper, sift to remove the shell. Take a small amount and place it on a plaster. For pain on the left side of the head, apply to the right temple; for pain on the right side, apply to the left temple. Remove after half a day. (Liang Fang Ji Ye)
