Harvesting and Processing
Wild ones are caught in summer and autumn, while artificially raised ones can be caught at any time. After capture, they are killed by scalding in boiling water, then sun-dried or oven-dried.
Medicinal Properties
The insect body is flat and oval-shaped, 1.3-3 cm long and 1.2-2.4 cm wide. The front end is narrower, the rear end is wider, the back is purplish-brown with a glossy luster and no wings. The pronotum is well-developed, covering the head; the dorsum of the abdomen consists of 9 segments arranged in an imbricate pattern. The ventral side is reddish-brown, the head is relatively small, with a pair of filiform antennae that are often detached. The thorax has 3 pairs of legs, with fine hairs and spines. The abdomen has transverse segments. The texture is brittle and fragile. Odor: fishy and fetid; Taste: slightly salty.

Prescriptions
1. For blood drum with blue veins on the abdominal skin: 24 g of peach kernel, 1.5 g of rhubarb, three ground beetles, 1.5 g of Gansui (powdered, taken mixed with the decoction). Decoct in water for oral administration. Take alternately with Ge Xia Zhu Yu Tang. (From "Yi Lin Gai Cuo" - Xia Yu Xue Tang) 2. For fractures and bone setting: Roast ground beetle until preserved in nature, grind into powder. Take 6-9 g each time. (From "Yi Fang Zhai Yao") 3. For infant umbilical redness, swelling, or pus/blood discharge: Calcinate dry ground beetle over fire until ash, grind into powder, and apply topically.
