Distribution

Mainly produced in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Sichuan, Guangdong, and other regions.

Harvesting and Processing

Mostly harvested in spring and autumn, by drying silkworms that have died from infection with Beauveria bassiana.

Medicinal Properties

This product is slightly cylindrical in shape, mostly curved and wrinkled, measuring 2-5 cm in length and 0.5-0.7 cm in diameter. The surface is grayish-yellow, covered with white powdery aerial hyphae and conidia. The head is relatively rounded, with 8 pairs of feet, distinct body segments, and a slightly bifurcated tail. It is hard and brittle, easily broken. The fracture surface is flat, with a white outer layer showing a powdery texture, and in the middle there are 4 shiny brown or shiny black silk gland rings. The odor is slightly fishy, and the taste is slightly salty.

Chemical Constituents

This product mainly contains protein and fat. It also contains various amino acids as well as trace elements such as iron, zinc, copper, manganese, and chromium.

Pharmacology

Has sedative and anticonvulsant effects; has anticoagulant and hypoglycemic effects, significantly inhibits the growth of sarcoma S180, and has weak antibacterial effects.

Properties and Channel Entry

Salty, acrid, neutral. Enters the Liver, Lung, and Stomach channels.

Functions and Indications

Calms Wind and stops spasms, expels Wind and alleviates pain, transforms Phlegm and dissipates masses. Used for Liver Wind with Phlegm, convulsions and spasms from epilepsy, infantile acute convulsions, tetanus, facial paralysis from Wind-Stroke, Wind-Heat headache, red eyes and sore throat, rubella with itching, and mumps.

Dosage and Administration

Oral: decoct in water, 3-10 g; grind into powder, 1-3 g; or made into pills or powder. External use: appropriate amount, decoct in water for washing; grind into powder and sprinkle or mix for application. Generally used after processing; for dispersing Wind-Heat, use raw.

Prescriptions

1. For toothache due to wind congestion: Jiangcan (Bombyx batryticatus), Gaoben (Ligusticum sinense), and Baizhi (Angelica dahurica) in equal parts. Grind into a fine powder. Apply a small amount to the painful tooth area and rinse with salt water. (Puji Fang - Jiangcan San) 2. For double tongue and wooden tongue: Jiangcan 3 g, Huanglian (Coptis chinensis, honey-fried) 6 g. Grind into powder, sprinkle on the affected area; it is effective when saliva flows. (Jidetang Jingyan Fang) 3. For throat impediment, mouth sores, and swollen cheeks and jaw: Baijiangcan (Bombyx batryticatus, stir-fried, removing silk and mouthparts) and Niubangzi (Arctium lappa, lightly stir-fried) in equal parts. Grind into fine powder, mix with refined honey to form pills, making 15 pills per 30 g. Take 1 pill, dissolve in the mouth after meals. (Yangshi Jia Cang Fang - Xiaodu Wan) 4. For throat impediment with loss of voice: Gualoupi (Trichosanthes kirilowii pericarp, stir-fried) 6 g, Jiangcan (stir-fried) 6 g, Gancao (Glycyrrhiza uralensis, stir-fried) 6 g. Grind together into powder. Take 9 g per dose with ginger decoction. (Yinan Zazheng Jian Fang) 5. For wheezing and coughing with a saw-like sound in the throat, unable to sleep: High-quality Mocha (Camellia sinensis) 30 g, Baijiangcan 30 g. Grind into fine powder, place in a bowl, pour in a small cup of boiling water, cover with a lid, and take before sleep, then add more water to drink. (Ruizhutang Jingyan Fang - Jiangcan Tang) 6. For scrofula: Baijiangcan, grind into powder, take 1.5 g with water, three times daily. (Qianjin Yaofang) 7. For generalized urticaria with painful sores: Baijiangcan, dry-fry until yellow, grind into fine powder, take with wine. (Shenghui Fang) 8. For all types of scabies and tinea: Baijiangcan 24 pieces (stir-fried, removing silk), Xieqiao (Scorpio, 5 pieces, remove poison, lightly stir-fried), Dilong (Pheretima, 3 pieces). Grind the above ingredients into very fine powder. Divide into two doses for adults and five doses for children. Take with warm wine, then bathe. (Yangshi Jia Cang Fang - Sanshen San)
