Botanical Description
Annual erect herb, 60-180 cm tall. Stem thick, densely covered with brown long stiff hairs. Petiole long, densely covered with yellow long stiff hairs; stipules small, lanceolate; trifoliolate compound leaves, terminal leaflet rhomboid-ovate, apex acuminate, base broadly cuneate or rounded, both surfaces with white long soft hairs, lateral leaflets smaller, obliquely ovate; rachis and petiolule densely covered with yellow long stiff hairs. Raceme axillary; calyx campanulate, calyx teeth 5, lanceolate. Corolla small, white or pale purple, slightly longer than calyx; standard apex slightly emarginate, wings with 1 auricle, keel falcate. Legume band-like oblong, slightly curved, pendulous, yellow-green, densely covered with yellow long stiff hairs. Seeds 2-5, yellow-green or black, ovate to subglobose. Flowering period June-July, fruiting period August-October.
Habitat and Distribution
Widely cultivated throughout various regions of China.
Harvesting and Processing
Take clean soybeans, soak in water until swollen, drain the water, cover with a damp cloth, sprinkle with water twice daily, and when the sprouts grow to 0.5-1 cm, remove and dry.
Medicinal Properties
This product is slightly kidney-shaped, approximately 8 mm long and 6 mm wide. The surface is yellow or yellow-brown, slightly wrinkled, with a distinct hilum on one side and one curved radicle at one end. The seed coat is brittle, often cracked or shed. There are two cotyledons, yellow in color, with a faint odor and a mild taste. When chewed, it has a beany flavor.
Chemical Constituents
This product mainly contains asparagine, choline, xanthine, and hypoxanthine.
Properties and Channel Entry
Sweet, neutral. Enters the Spleen, Stomach, and Lung channels.
Functions and Indications
Relieves the exterior and dispels summerheat, clears Heat and promotes diuresis
Dosage and Administration
Oral: decoct in water, 6-15 g; or extract the juice; or prepared as a powder.
Prescriptions
1. For headache due to Wind, painful Dampness Bi, tendon spasm and knee pain, accumulated Heat in the Stomach, and dry bound stools: Dahuangjuan (fried) 1 sheng, butter/cheese 15 g. Grind into powder, take 1 spoonful with warm water before meals, twice daily. (Puji Fang, Huangjuan Powder). 2. For water disease, generalized edema and fullness, wheezing dyspnea, and difficulty with urination and defecation: Dahuangjuan (vinegar-fried and dried) and Dahuang (slightly roasted, skin removed) each 30 g. Grind and sift into powder. Each time take 6 g, at bedtime, decoct scallion and tangerine peel in water, adjust and take, with passage of stool as the measure of effect. (Shengji Zonglu, Dadou Powder). 3. For elderly with Phlegm-Fire, frequent cough, chest and rib fullness and oppression, pain in the hundred joints, emaciation and Qi weakness, poor appetite: Dahuangjuan 1 jin, sun-dried, dry-fried until fragrant, grind into fine powder. Take 3 g each evening, adjust with black date decoction and take. (Fangmai Zhengzong). 4. For Yin-type convulsions and chronic fright, with excessive use of warming and hot medicinals leading to Heat pattern, turning into acute fright; also for vomiting worms: Dahuangjuan (sun-dried), Guanzhong, Banlangen, Gancao (honey-fried) each 30 g. Grind together into fine powder. Each time take 1.5 g or 3 g, decoct in plain water, cool before taking. For severe cases, use 9 g of the medicinals, decoct in rice-wash water with a few drops of oil. (Xiao'er Weisheng Zongwei Lunfang). 5. For infantile lockjaw and trismus: Use fresh bean sprouts at initial sprouting, mash thoroughly, mix with breast milk and give to the infant, or crush raw and squeeze juice, give a small amount. (Shenghui Fang). 6. For black nevi, dark spots, and to moisten body hair: Dahuangjuan 1 sheng, fry until fragrant, grind into powder. On an empty stomach, take 1 spoonful with warm wine. (Puji Fang).
