Harvesting and Processing

Take 30-100 g each of mulberry leaf and Artemisia annua, decoct in water, filter, mix the decoction into 1000 g of clean soybeans, allow to absorb completely, steam thoroughly, remove, cool slightly, and place in a container. Cover with the spent mulberry leaf and Artemisia annua residue, allow to ferment until a yellow coating appears all over, then remove. Discard the drug residue, wash clean, place in a container and ferment for another 15-20 days, until fully fermented and aroma emanates, then remove, steam briefly, and dry.

Medicinal Properties

This product is oval, slightly flat, 0.6-1 cm long and 0.5-0.7 cm in diameter. The surface is black, wrinkled and uneven. The texture is soft, and the cross-section is brownish-black. The odor is aromatic. The taste is slightly sweet.

Chemical Constituents

This product mainly contains protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins and other components.

Properties and Channel Entry

Bitter, pungent, and cool. Enters the Lung and Stomach channels.

Functions and Indications

Releases the exterior, relieves vexation, and diffuses stagnant Heat. Used for common cold, chills and fever with headache, irritability and chest oppression, and insomnia due to deficiency-vexation.

Dosage and Administration

Oral: decoct in water, 5-15 g; or made into pills. External use: appropriate amount, mash for application; or fry until charred, grind into powder, and mix for application.

Precautions and Contraindications

For those with weak stomachs prone to nausea, use with caution.

Prescriptions

1. For unresolved sweating after cold damage for three to four days with chest fullness: Sojae Semen Preparatum 1 sheng, Salt 1 ge. Add 4 sheng water, decoct to 1.5 sheng. Take in divided doses; vomiting may occur. (Meishi Jiyan Fang) 2. For malaria with abdominal distension, alternating chills and fever, and whole-body pain: Sojae Semen Preparatum 5 ge, Binglang 15 g. Add 2 bowls of water, decoct to 1 bowl; vomiting after taking leads to recovery. (Zhouhou Fang) 3. For persistent bloody dysentery: Sojae Semen Preparatum 60 g, roasted garlic flesh 45 g. Grind together into a paste, form pills the size of wutong seeds. Take 100 pills each morning with plain water. (Boji Fang) 4. For hemorrhoids and anal fistula: Sojae Semen Preparatum (stir-fried), Sophora japonica fruit (stir-fried), equal parts. Grind to powder. Take 30 g per dose, decoct in water and take on an empty stomach. (Weisheng Yijian Fang) 5. For phlegm-fluid headache with chills and fever, nausea and vomiting resembling cold damage: Sojae Semen Preparatum 3 ge, processed Banxia 15 g, Fuling 9 g, fresh ginger 10 slices. Decoct in water and take orally. (Fangmai Zhengzong)
