Harvested in summer and autumn, remove the meat, wash clean, and dry.

Chemical Constituents
Mainly contains calcium carbonate. Also contains organic matter and small amounts of magnesium, iron, silicate, sulfate, phosphate, chloride, and trace amounts of iodine.
Pharmacology
Has a protective effect on liver tissue and improves circulation; it can enhance the tolerance to hypoxia in mice.
Properties and Channel Entry
Salty, cold. Enters the Liver channel.
Functions and Indications
Calms the Liver and subdues Yang, clears the Liver and brightens the eyes. Used for headache and dizziness, red eyes with corneal opacity, blurred vision, and blue blindness (night blindness).
Dosage and Administration
Oral: Decoction, 10-30 g, crushed and decocted first; or made into pills or powder. External: Appropriate amount, ground into fine powder via water-grinding method for eye application. For calming the Liver, use raw for oral administration; for external eye application, use calcined form.
Precautions and Contraindications
Patients with Spleen and Stomach deficiency-cold should use with caution; those with indigestion or hypochlorhydria (low stomach acid) are contraindicated.
Prescriptions
1. Treats hypertension: a. Raw *Haliotis* (abalone shell) 30 g, raw *Ostrea* (oyster shell) 30 g, raw *Rehmannia* 15 g, *Chrysanthemum* 9 g. Decoct in water for oral use. Take 3 times daily. b. *Haliotis* 30 g, *Cassia* seed 30-60 g, *Eucommia* 12-15 g, *Prunella* 30-60 g. Decoct in water for oral use. c. *Haliotis* 30 g, *Uncaria* 24 g, *Bombyx* (stiff silkworm) 9 g, *Chrysanthemum* 9 g, *Prunella* 15 g. Decoct in water for oral use (suitable for elderly with hypertension and headache). (*Qingdao Chinese Herbal Medicine Manual*) 2. Treats wind-toxin attacking the head, causing blurred vision and discomfort of the head and eyes: *Haliotis*, *Notopterygium* (without rootstock), *Cassia* seed, *Chrysanthemum* each 30 g, *Glycyrrhiza* (honey-fried, sliced) 15 g. Grind the above five ingredients into a powder. Take 6 g each time, add one cup of water, decoct until six-tenths remains, take warm with the dregs after meals and before bedtime. (*Shengji Zonglu* Haliotis Powder) 3. Treats vertigo: *Haliotis* 24 g, *Chrysanthemum* 12 g, *Lycium* fruit 12 g, *Morus* leaf 12 g. Decoct in water for oral use. (*Qingdao Chinese Herbal Medicine Manual*) 4. Treats sudden swelling and pain of the eyes: *Haliotis* 15 g, *Plantago* seed, *Coptis* (without rootlets) each 60 g. Grind the above three ingredients into a powder, mix with honey to form pills the size of *Sterculia* seeds (phoenix tree seeds). Take 15 pills each time with rice water after meals, twice daily. Treats "locked throat wind" (acute laryngitis): *Haliotis* calcined with fire and quenched in vinegar three times, grind into fine powder, mix with rice vinegar, apply with a goose feather to wipe inside the throat to induce phlegm expulsion.
