Distribution

Mainly produced in Guangxi. Also produced in Guangdong and Yunnan.

Harvesting and Processing

Can be captured year-round. Remove the internal organs, wipe clean, and use bamboo strips to spread the body open so that it is flat and straight. Dry at low temperature.

Medicinal Properties

This product is flat and sheet-like. The head, neck, and trunk are 9-18 cm long, with the head and neck accounting for about one-third; the abdominal and back width is 6-11 cm; the tail is 6-12 cm long. The head is slightly flat and triangular, with two eyes mostly sunken into pits; fine teeth are present along the edges of the jaws, without any heterodont canines. The snout is semicircular; the rostral scale does not cut into the nostrils and is connected to the nasal scale; there is one pair of upper nasal scales on each side; 12-14 pairs of upper labial scales; 21 lower labial scales (including the mental scale). The abdomen and back are elliptical, with the abdomen being thin. The back is gray-black or silver-gray, with yellow-white, gray-green, or orange spots scattered or densely arranged into indistinct markings; the vertebrae and ribs are prominent. All four limbs have five digits; except for the first digit of the forelimb, all others have hooked claws; only traces of webbing are present between the digits, and the soles of the digits have adhesive pads. The tail is slender and firm, with slightly visible joints, the same color as the back, and has 6-7 distinct silver-gray ring bands; some regenerated tails are shorter than the original tail, with indistinct silver-gray ring bands. The entire body is densely covered with round or polygonal, slightly shiny fine scales. Odor: fishy; Taste: slightly salty.

Chemical Constituents

Contains carnosine, choline, carnitine, guanine, protein, cholesterol, various amino acids and inorganic elements, phospholipids, and multiple fatty acids.

Pharmacology

It has the effects of improving the body's anti-stress ability, enhancing immune function, anti-inflammation, antiasthmatic, and sex hormone-like effects, as well as delaying aging and lowering blood sugar.

Functions and Indications

Tonifies the Lungs and benefits the Kidneys, absorbs Qi and stabilizes panting, assists Yang and benefits the Essence. Used for Lung and Kidney insufficiency, deficient panting with rapid breathing, consumptive cough with hemoptysis, impotence, and nocturnal emission.

Dosage and Administration

Oral: decoct in water, 3-6 g; grind into powder, 1-1.5 g; or use in pills or powders.

Precautions and Contraindications

External contraction wind-cold asthma cough and yin deficiency fire hyperactivity are contraindicated.

Prescriptions

1. For consumptive cough and lung congestion with ascending Qi: Gecko (whole head and tail intact, coated with lard and roasted yellow) 1 pair, Fritillaria (roasted until slightly yellow) 30 g, Aster (root removed) 30 g, Apricot Kernel (soaked in hot water, skin and tips removed, double kernels, stir-fried with bran until yellow) 30 g, Soft-shelled Turtle Shell (coated with vinegar, roasted until yellow) 60 g, Gleditsia Seed (stir-fried until burnt yellow) 30 g, Mulberry Root Bark (sliced) 30 g. Grind all ingredients into powder, mix with refined honey and pound 200-300 times, form into pills the size of Chinese parasol seeds. Take 20 pills with jujube decoction each time, 3-4 times daily. For lung atrophy with cough: Gecko (fresh, wash thoroughly in hot water ten times, roast over slow fire until fragrant, grind into fine powder) 1 pair, Renshen 60 g, Poria 60 g, Anemarrhena 60 g, Fritillaria (core removed, roasted and washed in hot water) 60 g, Mulberry Root Bark 60 g, Licorice (roasted) 150 g, Large Apricot Kernel (washed in hot water, skin and tips removed, boiled until fragrant, removed and ground) 180 g. Grind the first eight ingredients into fine powder, mix with the ground apricot kernel. Take 1.5 g each time, add 2 slices of fresh ginger and a little lard, boil in 80% water until hot, take orally; or steep in hot water and take frequently. For chronic cough unhealed, with accumulated deficient heat in the lungs leading to abscesses, causing coughing up pus and blood, persistent day and night, throat obstruction, chest and diaphragm pain: Gecko 30 g, Donkey-hide Gelatin 30 g, Buffalo Horn 30 g, Deer-horn Gelatin 30 g, Antelope Horn 30 g. Except for the gelatin, grind the others into powder, then add the gelatin, divide into 4 doses. For each dose, use 3 liters of river water, simmer slowly in a silver or stone vessel until reduced to 0.5 liter, strain. Take lukewarm before bed, sip slowly. After finishing all doses, crush the residue again into one dose, add 3 liters of water, decoct to 0.5 liter, take as before. (From "Materia Medica Extension") 4. For postpartum asthma with dual depletion of Qi and Blood: Renshen 60 g, Prepared Rehmannia 60 g, Ophiopogon 9 g, Cinnamon 3 g, Perilla Seed 3 g, Gecko 6 g, Pinellia 0.9 g, decoct in water and take orally.
