Medicinal Properties
This product appears in curled tubular or semi-tubular form, 40-80 cm long, 0.1-0.3 cm thick. The outer surface is grayish-brown to grayish-brown, with slight longitudinal wrinkles, some with shallow cracks, densely covered with distinct elliptical transverse lenticels, brown or brownish-red, occasionally with protruding transverse ridges or larger circular branch scars, often with lichen spots attached; the inner surface is pale yellowish-brown or yellowish-white, smooth, with fine dense longitudinal striations. The texture is hard and brittle, easily broken, with a fibrous, flaky fracture surface, pale yellowish-brown or yellowish-white. Odor: faintly aromatic; Taste: bland, slightly astringent, mildly irritating to the tongue, followed by a discomfort in the throat.
Chemical Constituents
This product primarily contains flavonoids, saponins and their aglycones, volatile oils, sterols, organic acid esters, and glycosides as its main chemical constituents.
Pharmacology
Has anti-fertility, anti-allergic, and anti-tumor effects.

Sweet, neutral. Enters the Heart, Liver, and Lung channels.
Functions and Indications
Relieves depression, calms the Spirit, activates Blood circulation, and reduces swelling
Dosage and Administration
Internal: decoct 10-15 g in water; or made into pills or powder. External: apply an appropriate amount of ground powder mixed with a medium.
Precautions and Contraindications
Contraindicated in cases of wind-heat spontaneous sweating and external contraction with insomnia. Use with caution during pregnancy.
Prescriptions
1. For restlessness and insomnia: Hehuanpi 9 g, Yejiaoteng 15 g. Decoct in water and take orally. (Zhejiang Medicinal Flora) 2. For cough with mild fever, fullness and distress, indicating lung abscess: Hehuanpi a piece as large as a palm. Finely cut, add three sheng of water, decoct to one sheng, take in three divided doses. (Qianjin Yaofang Huanghun Tang) 3. For lung abscess that does not close for a long time: Hehuanpi and Baijian, decoct both together in water and take orally. (Jingyue Quanshu Hehuan Yin) 4. For night blindness: Hehuanpi and Qiancengta each 9 g. Decoct in water and take orally. (Qingdao Chinese Herbal Medicine Manual) 5. For traumatic injury to bones and tendons: Hehuanpi (dry-fried and powdered) 120 g, add Shexiang and Ruxiang each 3 g. Take 9 g per dose, mixed with warm wine, taken when neither hungry nor full.
