Botanical Description

Evergreen woody vine, up to 10 m long. Entire plant contains latex. Stem cylindrical, with lenticels; young branches covered with yellow pubescence, gradually glabrescent with age. Leaves opposite, leathery or nearly leathery, elliptic or ovate-lanceolate, 2-10 cm long, 1-4.5 cm wide; glabrous above, sparsely shortly pubescent below; lateral veins 6-12 per side. Cymes terminal or axillary, flowers white, fragrant; calyx deeply 5-lobed, lobes linear-lanceolate, apex recurved, base with 10 scale-like glands; flower buds obtuse at apex, corolla tube cylindrical, swollen in the middle, corolla lobes 5, contorted to the right; stamens 5, inserted at the middle of the corolla tube, ventrally attached to the stigma, anthers sagittate, base auriculate, hidden in the throat of the corolla; disc annular, 5-lobed, as long as the ovary; ovary composed of 2 separate carpels, glabrous, style cylindrical, stigma ovoid. Follicles divergent, glabrous, linear-lanceolate; seeds numerous, brown, linear, apex with white silky coma. Flowering period March to July, fruiting period July to December.

Habitat and Distribution

1. For pneumonia: Renshen 6 g, decoct in water and take orally. Internal use: decoct 3-10 g, large dose 10-30 g.

Harvesting and Processing

After 3-4 years of cultivation, from winter to early spring of the following year, cut the vine stems, then cut them into 25-30 cm lengths, tie them into small bundles, and dry them in the sun.

Medicinal Properties

This product is cylindrical in shape, mostly branched, with a diameter of 0.2-1 cm; the surface is reddish-brown, with punctate lenticels and adventitious roots; the texture is relatively hard, the fracture surface is fibrous, yellowish-white, and sometimes hollow. The leaves are opposite, with short petioles; the intact leaf blades are elliptical or ovate-elliptical, with an acute or obtuse apex, sometimes slightly concave, the leaf margins are slightly revolute, the upper surface is yellowish-green, the lower surface is paler; the venation is pinnate, more distinct on the lower surface and slightly raised; the texture is leathery, and when broken, white cottony filaments can be seen. The odor is faint, and the taste is slightly bitter. The quality is considered better when the leaves are abundant and green in color.

Chemical Constituents

Contains tracheloside, arctiin, nortracheloside, matairesinoside, coronaridine, and other components.

Pharmacology

It has antibacterial and anti-gout effects, and also affects the central nervous system, accelerating respiration; large doses cause respiratory failure. Its effect on the heart is weak, and it has an inhibitory effect on isolated intestines and the uterus.

Bitter, slightly cold. Enters the Heart, Liver, and Kidney channels.

Functions and Indications

Unblocks collaterals and alleviates pain, cools the Blood and clears Heat, resolves toxicity and reduces swelling. Indicated for Wind-Damp Bi pain, soreness and pain in the lower back and knees, spasms and contracture of the sinews and vessels, sore throat, furuncles and toxic swellings, traumatic injuries, and external bleeding.

Dosage and Administration

Internal: decoct in water, 6-15 g, single dose up to 30 g, steep in wine 30-60 g; or made into pills or powder. External: appropriate amount, grind into powder for topical application or mash for juice application.

Precautions and Contraindications

Contraindicated in cases of Yang deficiency with aversion to cold and loose stools.
