Harvesting and Processing
Harvested in autumn and winter, remove the remaining leaves, tie into bundles or cut into sections while fresh, then dry.
Medicinal Properties
This product is cylindrical, slightly twisted, branched, of varying lengths, and 4-7 mm in diameter. The surface is purplish-red or purplish-brown, rough, with twisted longitudinal wrinkles, slightly enlarged nodes with lateral branch scars, and a thin, peelable outer bark. It is brittle, easily broken; the bark at the fracture surface is purplish-red, the wood is yellowish-white or light brown with distinct vessel pores, and the pith is loose, whitish. Cut segments are cylindrical; the outer surface is purplish-red or purplish-brown, the cut surface shows purplish-red bark, yellowish-white or light brown wood with distinct vessel pores, and loose, whitish pith. Odor: faint; Taste: slightly bitter and astringent.
Chemical Constituents
Contains emodin-8-glucoside, chrysophanol, physcion, and luteolin-5-O- Contains components such as xylosides.
Pharmacology
Has sedative-hypnotic and lipid-lowering effects.
Properties and Channel Entry
Sweet, neutral. Enters the Liver and Heart channels.
Functions and Indications
Nourishes Blood, calms the Spirit, expels Wind, and unblocks the collaterals. Used for insomnia with excessive dreaming, body pain due to Blood deficiency, Wind-Damp Bi pain, and skin itching.
Dosage and Administration
Internal: decoct in water, 10-20 g; prepare as paste, steep in liquor, or mix into pills or powder
Prescriptions
1. For restless insomnia with excessive dreaming: a. Yejiaoteng 30 g, decoct in water and take orally. b. Yejiaoteng 30 g, Zhenzhumu 30 g, Danshen 9 g, decoct in water and take orally. (From "Zhejiang Medicinal Plants Flora") 2. For skin itching: Yejiaoteng and Cangerzi in appropriate amounts, decoct in water for external washing. (From "Anhui Chinese Herbal Medicine") 3. For axillary abscess: Shouwuteng and Jishiteng leaf in appropriate amounts, mash into a paste, and apply to the affected area. (From "Guangxi Folk Common Herbal Medicine") 4.
