Botanical Description

Harvesting and Processing
Harvested in autumn, remove impurities and sun-dry.
Medicinal Properties
The stem is slender and cylindrical, slightly twisted, with a diameter of 1-3 mm; the surface is yellow-green or pale yellow-brown, with longitudinal ridges and nodes, the internodes varying in length; the texture is brittle, easily broken, and the fracture surface shows several vascular bundles of varying sizes. The leaves are alternate, mostly wrinkled and broken; when flattened, the intact leaf blades are triangular-narrowly ovate or triangular-broadly ovate, with a cordate base, dark green or pale yellow-brown, the basal leaf veins are prominent, and the petioles are slender. Odor: faintly aromatic; Taste: bland.
Chemical Constituents
Contains aristolochic acid D, magnoflorine, andβ- Sitosterol.
Pharmacology
Has antihypertensive effect.
Properties and Channel Entry
Bitter, warm. Enters the Liver, Spleen, and Kidney channels.
Functions and Indications
Promotes Qi circulation and activates Blood, unblocks collaterals and alleviates pain. Used for stabbing pain in the epigastric and abdominal regions, and rheumatic arthralgia.
Dosage and Administration
Internal: decoct 6-10 g in water for oral administration. External: apply an appropriate amount, decoct in water for washing or mash for topical application.
Precautions and Contraindications
This product contains aristolochic acid, which may cause adverse reactions such as kidney damage
Prescriptions
1. For hernia pain: Tianxianteng 30 g, steep in a bowl of good wine, boil until reduced to half a bowl, and take. (From Sun Tianren's *Jixiao Fang*) 2. For rheumatoid arthritis: Tianxianteng, Weilingxian, and Haitongpi each 9 g. Decoct in water and take orally. (From *Qinling Bashan Natural Herbal Medicine Record*) 3. For poisonous snake bites and hemorrhoid swelling and pain: Fresh Tianxianteng, mashed, and applied topically to the affected area. (From *Northeast China Handbook of Common Chinese Materia Medica*) 4. For mastitis: Fresh Tianxianteng, in appropriate amount, knead until soft and apply externally, changing the dressing once daily. (From *Jiangxi Herbal Medicine*) 5. For red wandering erysipelas swelling: Tianxianteng 30 g, dry-bake and grind into powder, Ruxiang (Frankincense, ground) 3 g.
