Botanical Description
Evergreen erect shrub, 3-4 m tall. Armed with spines, spines 20-40 mm long, dark brown; branchlets densely covered with rusty brown scales, old branches appear black and glossy after scales fall off. Leaves alternate; petiole 5-8 mm long; leaf blade leathery, elliptic or broadly elliptic, 5-10 cm long, 1.8-5 cm wide, both ends obtuse or base rounded, margin slightly revolute or undulate, upper surface green and glossy, lower surface silvery white, densely covered with silvery white and a few brown scales; lateral veins 7-9 pairs, reticulate veins prominent on upper surface. Flowers white or silvery white, pendulous, scaly, 1-3 borne in leaf axils; pedicel 3-5 mm long; perianth tube rounded or funnelform, 5-7 mm long, apex 4-lobed, lobes pubescent inside; stamens 4, filaments very short; ovary superior, style erect, glabrous. Fruit ellipsoid, 12-14 mm long, covered with brown scales when young, turning red when mature. Flowering September to December, fruiting April to June of the following year.
Habitat and Distribution
Growing on sunny slopes or roadsides below an altitude of 1000 m. Distributed in Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Fujian, Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Sichuan, Guizhou and other regions.
Harvesting and Processing
Can be harvested year-round, used fresh or dried in the sun.
Medicinal Properties
Leaves elliptic or oblong, 4-9 cm long, 2-4 cm wide, apex bluntly acute, base rounded, margin entire or slightly undulate, leathery, upper surface light green or yellow-green, glossy, sparsely scattered with a few dark brown scales; lower surface covered with silvery white stellate hairs and scattered with numerous dark brown or light brown scales, midrib prominent on the lower surface, densely covered with dark brown scales, leaf blade often reflexed toward the lower surface, sometimes rolled into a tube. Texture slightly hard and brittle, odor faint, taste slightly astringent. Those with large leaves, light green color, glossy upper surface, free of twigs and petioles, and without broken leaves or impurities are considered superior.
Chemical Constituents
This product contains lupeol, ursolic acid, oleanolic acid,β-β-sitosterol, kumatakenin.
Pharmacology
Has the effect of dilating the bronchi and relieving asthma. It has inhibitory effects on Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Escherichia coli.

Dosage and Administration
Oral: 9-15 g decocted in water; or pounded for topical application; or ground into powder
Prescriptions
1. For cough: fresh Hutuizi Ye (Elaeagnus leaf) 15 g, decoct in water, add a small amount of sugar, and take orally. (Quanzhou Bencao) 2. For pulmonary tuberculosis with hemoptysis: fresh Hutuizi Ye 30 g, rock sugar 18 g. Stew in boiling water, take after meals, twice daily. (Mindong Bencao) 3. For bronchial asthma and chronic bronchitis: Hutuizi Ye and Pipaye (loquat leaf) 18 g each, decoct in water and take orally. (Zhejiang Folk Commonly Used Herbal Medicine) 4. For carbuncle, deep-rooted boil, and incised wound with bleeding: fresh Hutuizi Ye, mash and apply to the affected area. (Quanzhou Bencao) 5. For snake bite: fresh Hutuizi Ye, mash and extract juice, mix with wine and take orally; apply the residue to the affected area. (Quanzhou Bencao)
