Harvesting and Processing

Harvest in 2-3 batches during summer and autumn, remove impurities, and dry in the sun.

Medicinal Properties

This product is mostly wrinkled and curled, some broken. When flattened, intact leaves are oblong to oblong-obovate, 5-20 cm long, 2-6 cm wide; the upper surface is dark grayish-green, some with slightly raised small dots of darker color; the apex is obtuse, the margin entire or slightly undulate; the base is narrow and decurrent to the petiole forming a wing; the petiole is 4-10 cm long, light brownish-yellow. Texture brittle. Odor: faint; Taste: slightly sour, bitter, and astringent.

Chemical Constituents

This product contains indigo, isatan B, indirubin, furanxylose sweet acid and other components.

Pharmacology

Has anti-pathogenic microbial effects, and also has anti-endotoxin effects.

Properties and Channel Entry

Bitter, cold. Enters the Heart and Stomach channels.

Functions and Indications

Clears Heat and resolves toxicity, cools Blood and eliminates macules

Dosage and Administration

Decoction, 10-15 g; fresh product 30-60 g; or crush to extract juice for oral administration. External use: appropriate amount, crush for topical application; decoct for washing.

Precautions and Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients with Spleen and Stomach deficiency cold.

Prescriptions

1. For preventing influenza: Daqingye (Folium Isatidis) and Guanzhong each 500 g, mix, add 5000 ml water, decoct to 2000 ml. Adults take 100 ml each time, 3-4 times daily; children reduce dosage appropriately, take for 5 consecutive days. (National Compilation of Chinese Herbal Medicine) 2. For treating influenza: Daqingye (Folium Isatidis) and Banlangen (Radix Isatidis) each 30 g, Bohe (Mentha haplocalyx) 6 g. Decoct in water and drink as tea. (Hubei Chinese Herbal Medicine Record) 3. For treating pharyngitis, acute tonsillitis, and mumps: Daqingye (Folium Isatidis), Yuxingcao (Houttuynia cordata), and Xuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae) each 30 g. Decoct in water and take in 3 divided doses. (Hubei Chinese Herbal Medicine Record) 4. For treating anicteric hepatitis: Daqingye (Folium Isatidis) 60 g, Danshen (Salvia miltiorrhiza) 30 g, Dazao (Fructus Jujubae) 10 pieces. Decoct in water and take orally. (Shandong Chinese Herbal Medicine Manual) 5. For treating lip sores that have not healed for years: Take ten jin of Daqingye (Folium Isatidis), squeeze out the juice, and wash the affected area.
