Plant from the Typhaceae family: *Typha angustifolia* L.Typha angustifoliaL. or the dried pollen of plants from the same genus.

Botanical Description

Perennial herb, 1.5-3 m tall. Rhizome creeping, with many fibrous roots. Leaves narrowly linear, 5-8 mm wide, rarely up to 10 mm. Flowers small, unisexual, monoecious; spike cylindrical, brown; male and female inflorescences separate, male inflorescence in the upper part, 20-30 cm long, female inflorescence in the lower part, 9-28 cm long, with leaf-like bracts, early deciduous; male flowers with 2-3 stamens, basal hairs longer than the anther, apex simple or 2-3 forked, pollen grains solitary; female flowers with small bracts, spatulate, shorter than the style, hairs early deciduous, about as long as the bract, style linear or linear-oblong. Fruit spike 10-15 mm in diameter, nutlets small, without grooves, indehiscent, exocarp not separating. Flowering period June-July, fruiting period July-August.

Habitat and Distribution

Grows in shallow water. Distributed in Northeast, North, Northwest, and East China, as well as Henan, Hubei, Guangxi, Sichuan, Guizhou, and Yunnan regions.

Harvesting and Processing

In summer, collect the yellow male inflorescences from the upper part of the cattail spike, sun-dry them, then crush and sieve to obtain the pollen. Alternatively, cut off the male flowers, sun-dry them to obtain pollen with male flowers attached, which is known as raw Puhuang.

Pharmacology

Has the effect of improving myocardial microcirculation, lowering blood lipids and anti-atherosclerosis, promoting coagulation, exciting uterine smooth muscle, having a spasmolytic effect on intestinal smooth muscle, inhibiting cellular and humoral immunity, and possessing anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, anti-allergic, and hemolytic effects.

Sweet, neutral. Enters the Liver and Pericardium channels.

Functions and Indications

Stops bleeding, resolves stasis, and promotes diuresis. Used for hematemesis, epistaxis, hemoptysis, bloody dysentery, hematochezia, metrorrhagia and metrostaxis, traumatic bleeding, epigastric and abdominal pain, amenorrhea and dysmenorrhea, stabbing pain in the chest and abdomen, swelling and pain from falls and fractures, painful and hesitant urination with blood, leukorrhea, severe tongue swelling, oral ulcers, suppurative otitis media, and pruritus and dampness of the external genitalia.

Dosage and Administration

Internal: decoct in water, 5-10 g, must be wrapped during decoction; or made into pills or powder. External: appropriate amount, grind into powder and sprinkle or mix for application. For dispersing stasis and alleviating pain, use raw; for hemostasis, use stir-fried; for bleeding due to blood stasis, use half raw and half stir-fried.

Precautions and Contraindications

Use with caution during pregnancy.

Prescriptions

1. For excessive menstruation in women with blood stasis causing incessant spotting: Puhuang (slightly stir-fried) 90 g, Longgu 75 g, Aiye 30 g. Grind the three ingredients into powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of wutong seeds. Take 20 pills each time, swallowing with boiled rice water or mugwort decoction, twice daily. (From *Shengji Zonglu*, Puhuang Powder) 2. For metrorrhagia: Puhuang and Huangqin 30 g each, Heye ashes 15 g. Grind into powder. Take 9 g each time on an empty stomach, mixed with wine. (From *Weisheng Yijian Fang*) 3. For hemoptysis, hematemesis, spitting blood, and irritability: Sheng Puhuang and Gan Heye in equal parts. Grind into powder. Take 9 g each time, mix with a strong decoction of Sangbaipi (cooled), taken after meals. (From *Weisheng Baojian*, Enpao Powder) 4. For epistaxis with severe bleeding causing near-fainting and unresponsive to other medications: Sheng Puhuang 6 g, Qingdai 1.5 g, mixed with fresh lotus root juice as a single dose, effective immediately.
