Botanical Description
Perennial herb, 20-100 cm tall. Stem erect, base glabrous or slightly reddish, sparsely branched. Leaves alternate, single; leaf blade ovate, oblong, or lanceolate, 4-10 cm long, 1.5-4 cm wide, apex acute, acuminate, or obtuse, base decurrent into petiole, margin sharply serrate; basal petioles longer, deciduous after flowering; upper petioles shorter or absent, leaf blades gradually narrower or entire. Capitulum (head), yellow, approximately 1 cm in diameter, axillary, arranged in racemes; involucre broadly campanulate, 4-6 mm long; bracts usually in 3 series, outer bracts ovate-lanceolate, inner bracts lanceolate; marginal florets ligulate, approximately 8, female; central florets tubular, bisexual. Achene cylindrical, glabrous or apex sparsely soft-hairy; pappus white, 1-2 series, rough. Flowering in October, fruiting in November.

Harvesting and Processing
Harvested in autumn during the flowering and fruiting period, remove sediment and sand, then dry in the sun.
Chemical Constituents
This product contains anhydrous rutin, Solidagoside, sitosterol, and other components.
Pharmacology
It has antibacterial, antiasthmatic, and expectorant effects; animal experiments have proven it can promote leukocyte phagocytosis; it has a hemostatic effect on acute nephritis; subcutaneous injection at a low dose has a diuretic effect.
Properties and Channel Entry
Acrid, bitter, and cool. Enters the Lung and Liver channels.
Functions and Indications
Clears Heat and resolves toxicity, disperses Wind-Heat. Used for throat obstruction, acute tonsillitis, swollen and painful throat, furuncles and swelling pain, and Wind-Heat common cold.
Dosage and Administration
Internal use: decoct in water, 9-15 g, fresh product 20-30 g. External use: appropriate amount, fresh product mashed for topical application; or decocted and the juice applied by brushing.
Precautions and Contraindications
Caution should be exercised in pregnant women.
Prescriptions
1. For prevention and treatment of colds: a. For prevention of colds: Yizhihuanghua (Solidago decurrens), Rendongteng (Lonicera japonica), and Yidianhong (Emilia sonchifolia) in appropriate amounts. Decoct in water and take orally. (From "Fujian Materia Medica") b. For wind-heat type common cold: Yizhihuanghua root 9 g, Zuoyucao (Buddleja lindleyana) root 6 g. Decoct in water and take orally, 1 dose daily. (From "Jiangxi Herbal Medicine") 2. For lung heat cough and whooping cough: Yizhihuanghua 15 g, Feijingcao (Ophiopogon japonicus), and Tuerfeng (Ainsliaea fragrans) each 15 g, Dilong (Pheretima aspergillum) 6 g. Decoct in water and take orally. (From "Sichuan Traditional Chinese Medicine Annals," 1982 edition) 3. For lung abscess (pulmonary carbuncle): Yizhihuanghua root 15 g, pig lung 1 piece. Stew in water, take the soup and eat the lung, 1 dose daily. (From "Jiangxi Herbal Medicine") 4. For pulmonary tuberculosis with hemoptysis: Yizhihuanghua 60 g, rock sugar in appropriate amount. For heatstroke-induced vomiting and diarrhea: Yizhihuanghua 15 g, camphor leaves 3 pieces. Decoct in water and take orally. (From "Fujian Materia Medica") 6.
