Botanical Description
Perennial herb. Root tuber fusiform or radish-shaped, up to 7 mm in diameter. Stem erect, 30-80 cm tall, with ridges and long hairs. Basal leaves petiolate, blade oblanceolate or obovate-elliptic, 8-20 cm long, 2.5-8 cm wide, pinnately deeply lobed or nearly completely divided, with 6-12 pairs of lateral lobes, the middle lateral lobes larger, gradually smaller upward and downward, margin toothed with spines at the tips; leaves gradually smaller from the base upward, similar in shape and division to the basal leaves, but sessile, base expanded and half-clasping; all stem leaves concolorous, green, with sparse hairs along the veins on both surfaces. Capitula erect, solitary or several clustered at branch ends forming a panicle; involucre campanulate, 3 cm in diameter; phyllaries in about 6 rows, imbricate; flowers bisexual, all tubular, corolla purple or purplish-red, 1.5-2 cm long, 5-lobed; stamens 5, anthers with appendages at apex and tails at base. Achenes oblong, slightly flattened, about 4 mm long; pappus feathery, dark gray, slightly shorter than the corolla. Flowering period May to August, fruiting period June to August.
Habitat and Distribution
Growing on hillsides, grasslands, and roadsides. Distributed in Hebei, Shaanxi, Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Fujian, Taiwan, Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, and other regions.
Harvesting and Processing
Harvest the above-ground parts during summer and autumn when flowers are in bloom, remove impurities, and dry in the sun.
Chemical Constituents
This product contains pectolinarigenin, pectolinarin, dotriacontanol,ψ- Dandelion sterol acetate,β-α-amyrin acetate and other constituents.
Pharmacology
Stops bleeding; has the effect of lowering blood pressure; antibacterial; in experiments on isolated, in situ, pregnant, non-pregnant, or chronic uterine fistula models, it shows a significant excitatory effect, can increase uterine tone and amplitude of contraction, gradually leading to spastic contraction; it has an inhibitory effect on the duodenum.

Dosage and Administration
Cools Blood to stop bleeding, moves stasis to reduce swelling. Indications: hematemesis, hemoptysis, epistaxis, hematochezia, hematuria, metrorrhagia and metrostaxis, traumatic bleeding, sores and swelling pain, scrofula, eczema, hepatitis, nephritis.
Dosage and Administration
Oral: decoct in water, 5-10 g; fresh product 30-60 g. External use: appropriate amount, mash and apply. For hemostasis, it is suitable to be used charred.
Precautions and Contraindications
Contraindicated in cases of deficiency-cold bleeding and Spleen-Stomach deficiency-cold.
Prescriptions
1. For Heat binding with Blood stasis causing hematuria: 30-40 g of fresh Cirsium japonicum root. Wash thoroughly, crush, add boiling water and simmer for 1 hour. Take before meals, three times daily. ("Fujian Folk Herbal Medicine") 2. For traumatic bleeding: Grind Cirsium japonicum root into a very fine powder and apply to the affected area. ("Zhejiang Folk Commonly Used Herbal Medicine") 3. For lung abscess: 120 g of fresh Cirsium japonicum, decoct in water, take after breakfast and dinner. ("Mindong Bencao") 4. For furuncles, carbuncles, sores, and ulcerations with burning heat and redness: Fresh Cirsium japonicum root, mix thoroughly with winter honey, apply to the affected area, change twice daily. ("Fujian Folk Herbal Medicine") 5. For scalds and burns: Fresh Cirsium japonicum root, wash with cold boiled water, then mash, wrap in linen cloth, heat, and squeeze out the juice. Apply to the affected area, two to three times daily. ("Fujian Folk Herbal Medicine") 6. For toothache and oral mucosal erosion: 30 g of Cirsium japonicum root, use for frequent mouth rinsing.
