Plant of the Euphorbiaceae family, *Euphorbia cyathophora*Euphorbia heterophyllaL. in the dried whole herb.

Botanical Description

Annual herb, approximately 1 m tall. Stem solitary, with obliquely ascending and spreading, robust branches, sparsely pubescent or glabrous. Leaves on lower and middle stem alternate, those below the inflorescence opposite; petiole 2-3 cm long; stipules glandular-dotted; leaf shape variable, ovate, elliptic, lanceolate, or linear, 4-10 cm long, 2.5-5 cm wide, lyrate-pinnatifid or entire, margin with undulate shallow teeth or sharp teeth or entire, both surfaces sparsely pubescent; leaves below inflorescence usually red at base or entirely. Many cyathia arranged in dense corymbs at stem and branch apices; involucre campanulate, green, 3-4 mm wide, apex 5-lobed; glands 1-2, cup-shaped, without petaloid appendages. Male flowers 20 or more, bracts membranous, apex lacerate; ovary ovoid, 3-loculed; styles 3, free, apex 2-cleft. Capsule ovoid-trigonous, approximately 5 mm in diameter, glabrous; seeds ovoid, grayish-brown, surface verrucose, without caruncle. Flowering and fruiting period: August.

Habitat and Distribution

It is cultivated in various regions across China and in major botanical gardens; in Guizhou, it is also found growing wild as an escape.

Harvesting and Processing

Can be harvested year-round. Wash clean, use fresh or sun-dry.

Chemical Constituents

This product containsN- Acetylgalactosamine.

Pharmacology

It has no effect on killing schistosomes, but in schistosomiasis patients with ascites, the diuretic effect is significant; its purgative action is strong.

Properties and Channel Entry

Bitter, astringent, cold, toxic. Enters the Liver channel.

Functions and Indications

Cools Blood, regulates menstruation, disperses stasis, and reduces swelling. Mainly indicated for excessive menstruation, traumatic swelling and pain, bleeding, and bone fractures.

Dosage and Administration

Oral: decocted in water, 3-9 g; External: appropriate amount, fresh product mashed for topical application.

Prescriptions

1. For excessive menstruation and traumatic injuries: 6-9 g of Euphorbia heterophylla. Decoct in water for oral administration, take twice daily. ("Wenshan Chinese Herbal Medicine") 2. For traumatic bleeding and fractures: Appropriate amount of fresh Euphorbia heterophylla leaves, mash and apply to the affected area, change dressing once every 2-3 days.
