Ingredients
100 g hawthorn berries, 500 g (about 2 cups) fresh milk.
Seasonings
1000 g (about 4 cups) boiling water, 75 g (about 1/2 cup) wet starch, 450 g (about 2 1/4 cups) sugar.
Instructions
1. Place the hawthorn berries in a clay bowl with a small amount of boiling water, then steam in a steamer until they dissolve completely.
2. Bring water to a boil in a pot, add sugar and cook until dissolved, then add fresh milk and heat until just about to boil. Stir in a cornstarch slurry and mix until smooth to create a white milk custard. Remove two-thirds of it into a soup bowl, then add the steamed and melted hawthorn to the remaining milk custard, stirring until evenly combined to form a red hawthorn milk custard.
3. Slowly pour the hawthorn milk mixture into the other side of the white milk mixture, then pipe the white milk mixture along the edge of the bowl so that each color occupies half the bowl's surface, forming a yin-yang (tai chi) shape. This beverage has a delightful flavor and high nutritional value.
