Harvesting and Processing
Harvest when the fruit changes from green to yellow in autumn, then dry.
Medicinal Properties
This product is ovoid in shape, 3-7 cm long and 2-4 cm in diameter. The surface is yellow-green, gray-green, or brownish-brown, with 12 longitudinal ridges from which numerous transverse parallel fine veins branch out. The apex is flat and blunt, and the base has a slender fruit stalk. The pericarp is light and brittle, easily splitting into 6 valves, and the fruit stalk also splits into 6 strips. The inner surface of the pericarp is smooth and glossy, with relatively dense transverse veins. The fruit has 6 chambers, each chamber containing numerous seeds neatly arranged in a flat, stacked manner. The seeds are flat and thin, obtuse-triangular or fan-shaped, 6-10 mm long and 8-12 mm wide, with winged margins, pale brown. Odor: distinctive; Taste: slightly bitter.
Chemical Constituents
This product mainly contains aristolochic acid I, quaternary ammonium alkaloids, and other components.
Pharmacology
Expectorant; antitussive; antibacterial; relaxes bronchial smooth muscle; constricts smooth muscle, etc.
Properties and Channel Entry
Bitter, slightly cold. Enters the Lung and Large Intestine channels.
Functions and Indications
Clears the Lungs and descends Qi, stops cough and calms wheezing, clears the Intestines and eliminates hemorrhoids. Used for lung heat cough and wheezing, sputum with blood, intestinal heat hemorrhoidal bleeding, and hemorrhoid swelling and pain.
Dosage and Administration
Oral administration: decocted in water, 3-9 g; or made into pills or powder
Precautions and Contraindications
This herb is bitter and cold in nature; excessive internal use may cause vomiting. It is contraindicated for those with deficiency-cold type dyspnea and cough, as well as those with spleen deficiency and diarrhea; use with caution in individuals with weak stomach. This herb contains aristolochic acid, which may lead to adverse reactions such as kidney damage: use with caution in children and the elderly; contraindicated in pregnant women, infants, and individuals with renal insufficiency.
Prescriptions
1. For chronic cough unrelieved: Madouling 15 g, Lourenshuang 6 g, Bei Wuweizi 3 g. All stir-fried, ground into powder, take 3 g each time, mixed with plain boiled water after meals, morning and evening. (From *Bencao Huiyan*) 2. For bloody hemorrhoids and various fistula sores: Madouling 30 g, Gancao 15 g, Huai Shengdi and Gan Baizhu each 60 g. Prepare as five doses, decoct in water and take orally. (From *Bencao Huiyan*) 3. For chronic edema with abdominal distension like a drum: Boil Madouling in water and take the decoction. (From *Qianjin Yaofang*) 4. For lung Qi heat obstruction causing urinary retention or difficult urination: Madouling and Huai Shengdi each 9 g, Sheng Gancao 3 g, Fuling, Mutong, Dengxincao each 4.5 g. Decoct in water and take orally. (From *Bencao Huiyan*) 5. For heart pain: One large Madouling, burn on a lamp until retaining the property, grind into powder, take with warm wine. (From *Zhai Xuan Fang*)
