Botanical Description
Evergreen climbing shrub, approximately 5 m tall. Stems glabrous (hairless), with hooked prickles and bristles. Pinnately compound leaves; petioles and rachis with small prickles and bristles; stipules lanceolate, separate from petiole, early deciduous. Leaflets leathery, usually 3, rarely 5, elliptic-ovate or lanceolate-ovate, 2.5-7 cm long, 1.5-4.5 cm wide. Apex acute or acuminate, base subrounded, margin finely serrate, glabrous, glossy. Flowers solitary on lateral branch apex; pedicels and hypanthium exterior densely covered with bristles; sepals 5; petals 5, white, 5-9 cm in diameter; stamens numerous; carpels numerous, stigmas clustered at receptacle mouth. Fruit obovoid, 2-4 cm long, purple-brown, exterior densely bristly. Flowering period April to June, fruiting period July to November.
Habitat and Distribution
Growing in sunny mountain fields, field edges, streamsides, and thickets at elevations of 100-1600 m. Distributed in Shaanxi, Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Fujian, Taiwan, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong, Hainan, Guangxi, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, and other regions.
Harvesting and Processing
10-11 months fruit ripens and turns red when harvested, dried, and remove burrs.
Medicinal Properties
This product is a false fruit developed from the receptacle, obovoid in shape, 2-3.5 cm long and 1-2 cm in diameter. The surface is reddish-yellow or reddish-brown with protruding small brown spots, which are remnants of fallen bristles. The apex has a disc-shaped persistent calyx remnant, with a yellow central style base, and the lower part tapers to a point. The texture is hard. When cut open, the receptacle wall is 1-2 mm thick, containing numerous hard achenes; the inner wall and achenes are covered with pale yellow pubescence. Odor: faint; Taste: sweet, slightly astringent.
Chemical Constituents
This product contains citric acid, agrimonin, tormentic acid-6-methoxy-β-D-glucopyranosyl ester, ursolic acid, and laevigatin A among other constituents.
Pharmacology
Reduces urination frequency, prolongs the interval between urination, and increases urine output; reduces experimental atherosclerosis; and exhibits anti-pathogenic effects, among others.
Properties and Channel Entry
Sour, sweet, and astringent, neutral in nature. Enters the Kidney, Bladder, and Large Intestine channels.
Functions and Indications
Consolidates essence and reduces urination, stops uterine bleeding and leukorrhea, and astringes the intestines to stop diarrhea. Used for nocturnal emission and spermatorrhea, enuresis and frequent urination, metrorrhagia and leukorrhea, and chronic diarrhea and dysentery.
Dosage and Administration
Oral: decoct in water 9-15 g; or made into pills, powder, or decoction extract.
Precautions and Contraindications
Those with excess Fire or pathogenic Heat should use with caution.

1. For chronic diarrhea and dysentery due to deficiency: Cherokee rose fruit (remove outer thorns and inner pulp) 30 g, Codonopsis root 9 g. Decoct in water for oral administration.
