Botanical Description

Annual or biennial herb, 20-80 cm tall. Entire plant grayish-white. Stem erect, branching in upper part, with longitudinal grooves, densely covered with branched short hairs. Leaf outline oblong or oblong-lanceolate, 3-7 cm long, 1-4 cm wide, bipinnate to tripinnate or deeply divided, ultimate segments linear or linear-oblong, 2-5 mm long, apex obtuse, entire margin, both surfaces with branched short hairs; lower stem leaves petiolate, upper petioles gradually shortened or nearly sessile. Raceme terminal, with many flowers; sepals 4, linear-oblong, apex obtuse, about 2 mm long, margin membranous, back with branched fine hairs; petals yellow, spatulate, nearly as long as sepals; stamens 6, nearly as long as petals, with claws at base; pistil 1, ovary cylindrical, style short. Silique cylindrical, 2.5-3 cm long, glabrous, slightly curved inward, not in line with pedicel, fruit valve midrib distinct. Seeds in one row per locule, small, numerous, oblong, slightly flattened, pale reddish-brown, surface with fine reticulation, becoming mucilaginous when moist. Flowering and fruiting period April to July.

Habitat and Distribution

Descurainia sophia grows on hillsides, fields, and farmland. It is distributed in Northeast, North, Northwest, East, and Southwest China.

Harvesting and Processing

In summer, when the fruit is ripe, harvest the plant, dry it in the sun, rub out the seeds, and remove impurities.

Medicinal Properties

Oblong-elliptic, slightly flattened, 0.8-1.2 mm long, approximately 0.5 mm wide. Surface brown or reddish-brown, slightly lustrous, with 2 longitudinal grooves, one of which is more distinct. One end is bluntly rounded, the other end slightly concave or nearly truncate; the hilum is whitish, located at the concave or truncate end. Odor: faint; Taste: slightly acrid and bitter, with a slight stickiness.

Chemical Constituents

This product mainly contains sinigrin, erucic acid, sinapine, glucosinolates, allyl isothiocyanate, and other components.

Dosage and Administration

Oral administration: decoct in water, 3-9 g; or made into pills or powder. External use: appropriate amount, decoct for washing or grind into powder for topical application. Use raw for promoting diuresis and reducing edema; use stir-fried for treating phlegm-rheum with wheezing and cough; use honey-fried for lung deficiency with phlegm obstruction causing wheezing and cough.

Precautions and Contraindications

For Spleen deficiency with wheezing and cough, and Spleen deficiency with edema and fullness, use with caution; do not take for prolonged periods.

Prescriptions

1. For lung abscess with dyspnea preventing lying flat: Tinglizi (roasted until yellow, pounded, formed into pills the size of a bullet), twelve Dazao. First, boil three sheng of water with the Dazao, remove the Dazao, add Tinglizi, boil to one sheng, and take in one dose. (From "Jin Gui Yao Lue" - Tingli Daza Xiefei Decoction) 2.
