Botanical Description

Annual or biennial herb, 30-70 cm tall. Entire plant glabrous (hairless), stem erect, upper part dichotomously branched. Internodes near base stout and short, nodes slightly swollen, surface milky-white. Leaves opposite, sessile; blade ovate-elliptic to ovate-lanceolate, 1.5-7.5 cm long, 0.5-3.5 cm wide, apex acuminate, base rounded or subcordate, slightly connate and clasping the stem, margin entire, both surfaces powdery-green. Midvein prominent on lower surface, broader near base. Cymes loosely arranged at branch tips; pedicels slender, with 2 scaly bracteoles below; calyx cylindrical, enlarging after flowering into a 5-angled spherical shape, apex 5-toothed; petals 5, pink, obovate, apex with irregular small teeth; stamens 10, unequal in length; ovary superior, 1-locular, styles 2. Capsule enclosed by persistent calyx, splitting into 4 teeth at apex when mature. Seeds numerous, dark black, spherical, with distinct tuberculate protrusions. Flowering April to June, fruiting May to July.

Habitat and Distribution

It grows on hillsides and roadsides, most abundantly in wheat fields. It is also cultivated. Distributed throughout China except in the southern region.

Harvesting and Processing

Harvest the plant in summer when the fruit is ripe but the pericarp has not yet split, dry it in the sun, thresh the seeds, remove impurities, and dry again in the sun.

Medicinal Properties

This product is spherical, approximately 2 mm in diameter. The surface is black, a few are reddish-brown, with a slight luster and fine granular protrusions; there is one concave longitudinal groove on one side. The texture is hard. The endosperm is white, the embryo is bent into a ring, and the cotyledons are 2. The odor is faint, and the taste is slightly astringent and bitter.

Chemical Constituents

This product contains components such as vaccarin, saponarin, vaccarin, saponaretin, vaccaxanthone, isosaponarin, vaccarinogenin, and D-glucose.

Pharmacology

Anti-implantation; anti-early pregnancy; stimulates the uterus.

Properties and Channel Entry

Bitter, neutral. Enters the Liver and Stomach channels.

Functions and Indications

Activates Blood, unblocks the channels, promotes lactation, reduces swelling, and facilitates urination to relieve painful urination. Used for amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, insufficient lactation, painful breast abscesses, and painful urinary dribbling.

Dosage and Administration

Internal use: decoct in water, 6-10 g.

Precautions and Contraindications

Pregnant women and those with Blood deficiency without Blood stasis should both avoid taking this medication.

Prescriptions

1. For early-stage acute mastitis: Wangbuliuxing 30 g, Pugongying, Gualouren each 9 g, Dangguiwei 9 g, decoct in wine and take orally. (Ben Cao Hui Yan) 2. For abscesses and swellings: Wangbuliuxing (ground into powder) 2 sheng, Gancao 150 g, Yegen 60 g, Guixin 120 g, Danggui 120 g. Take the five ingredients, take one fangcunbi with wine, three times during the day and once at night. (Yi Xin Fang, Wangbuliuxing San) 3. For early-stage furuncles: Wangbuliuxing seeds ground into powder, mix with Chansu, form pills the size of millet grains. Take one pill with wine; sweating leads to recovery. (Bin Hu Ji Jian Fang) 4. For persistent hematuria: Wangbuliuxing 30 g, Danggui Shen, Chuanxuduan, Baishao Yao, Danshen each 6 g. Divide into two doses, decoct in water and take orally.
