Habitat and Distribution

It grows in mountain slopes, thickets, roadsides, and village edges. It is distributed in Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Fujian, Taiwan, Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Yunnan, and other regions.

Harvesting and Processing

Collect the roots from autumn to early spring, wash clean and slice, or peel off the inner bark. Dry in the sun and set aside for use.

Medicinal Properties

Root cylindrical or with branches, up to 40 cm long, diameter 0.5-3 cm. Surface yellowish-brown to grayish-brown, with irregular longitudinal wrinkles and transverse lenticels and slightly protruding rootlet scars. Texture tough and firm; transverse section shows bark layer 1.5-4 mm thick, off-white, easily separable from the wood, with numerous cotton-like fibers; wood pale yellow, with radial striations. Odor faint; taste slightly bitter, with a prolonged burning and uncomfortable sensation upon chewing. Those with thick strips and thick bark are considered superior.

Chemical Constituents

The roots and root bark contain tricin and kaempferol-3-O-.β-D-glucopyranoside,β- β-sitosterol, Wikstroemia indica polysaccharide-1, daphnoretin, genkwanin, wikstroemin, arctigenin, matairesinol, pinoresinol, nortrachelogenin, and wikstroemoidin.

Pharmacology

Has abortion-inducing and anti-tumor effects; has diuretic and antibacterial effects.

Functions and Indications

Clears Heat and resolves toxicity, disperses nodules and expels stasis, promotes urination and kills parasites. Mainly indicated for pneumonia, bronchitis, mumps, pharyngitis, lymphadenitis, mastitis, carbuncles and furuncles, rheumatic arthritis, edema and ascites, leprosy, amenorrhea, and traumatic injuries.

Dosage and Administration

Internal: decoct in water (should be decocted for more than 4 hours), 10-15 g; External: appropriate amount, mash for application, or grind into powder for mixing and application.

Precautions and Contraindications

This product is toxic and is contraindicated in pregnant women and individuals with deficient-cold constitutions.

Prescriptions
