Botanical Description

Annual herb, approximately 1 m tall. Culm erect, cylindrical. Leaf sheaths equal to internodes in length, lower ones exceeding internodes; ligule membranous and relatively hard, narrow lanceolate, base decurrent on both sides and fused with leaf sheath margins; leaf blade flat lanceolate, 25-60 cm long, 5-15 mm wide, with distinct auricles when young. Panicle loose, glumes usually scabrous; spikelet oblong, usually brownish-purple; sterile lemma awl-shaped, fertile lemma with 5 veins, finely hairy, awned or awnless; palea with 3 veins, finely hairy; lodicules 2, ovate; stamens 6; styles 2, stigma brush-like, protruding from both sides of the floret. Caryopsis smooth, plump, slightly round, relatively white in color. Flowering and fruiting period: July to August.

Habitat and Distribution

It is cultivated in various regions of southern and central China.

Harvesting and Processing

Harvested in summer and autumn after glutinous rice is cut, dig up the rhizomes and fibrous roots, remove the remaining stems, wash clean, and dry in the sun.

Medicinal Properties

The entire product forms a loose, clustered mass, with a separated remnant stem at the top, which is cylindrical, hollow, 2.5-6.5 cm long, and wrapped in several layers of gray-white or yellow-white leaf sheaths; at the lower end, numerous fibrous roots are clustered. The fibrous roots are slender and curved, with a diameter of 1 mm. The surface is yellow-white to yellow-brown, turning white after the epidermis peels off, with slight longitudinal wrinkles. The texture is light and soft, with a faint odor and a bland taste.

Chemical Constituents

This product primarily contains multiple amino acids such as cystine and histidine, as well as glucose, fructose, and kaempferol constituents.

Properties and Channel Entry

Sweet, neutral. Enters the Lung and Kidney channels.

Functions and Indications

Nourishes Yin and clears Heat, stops sweating. Indications: Yin deficiency with fever, spontaneous sweating and night sweats, thirst and dry throat, hepatitis, filariasis.

Dosage and Administration

Oral administration: decoct in water, 15-30 g, with high doses of 60-120 g.

Prescriptions

1. For night sweats due to Yin deficiency: 60 g each of glutinous rice root and black dates, 30 g brown sugar, decoct in water for oral administration. (Fujian Materia Medica Annals) 2. For hepatitis: 62 g each of glutinous rice root and Salvia chinensis. Add an appropriate amount of sugar, decoct and take orally. (Southern Herbal Medicine) 3. For filariasis (chyluria): 250-500 g of glutinous rice root, optionally add red dates. Decoct in water for oral administration. (Southern Herbal Medicine) 4.
