Botanical Description

Perennial herb, 40-120 cm tall. Roots carrot-shaped. Entire plant glabrous (hairless). Stem solitary, often somewhat zigzag, with white latex. Basal leaves cordate-reniform, wider than long; cauline leaves with petioles 2-6 cm long, leaf blades cordate or in upper stem leaves the base nearly truncate, usually the leaf base not decurrent onto the petiole as wings, apex obtuse to shortly acuminate, margin singly or doubly serrate, 3-13 cm long, 2-8 cm wide. Inflorescence a large panicle with long, nearly spreading branches, or a narrow panicle with short branches; calyx tube obconical-triangular, 5-lobed, lobes oblong or lanceolate; corolla campanulate, blue, blue-purple, or white, 5-lobed, lobes broadly triangular-semiorbicular, apex acute; disc tubular, uniform in width or tapering upward; style nearly as long as corolla. Capsule ovoid-conical. Flowering period July-September.

Habitat and Distribution

Grows on hillside grasslands or forest edges. Distributed in Liaoning, Hebei, Shandong, Jiangsu, Anhui, and Zhejiang.

Harvesting and Processing

Harvested in spring, remove stems and leaves. Wash clean and sun-dry.

Chemical Constituents

This product containsβ- β-sitosterol and daucosterol, among others.

Properties and Channel Entry

Sweet, cold. Enters the Lung and Spleen channels.

Functions and Indications

Moistens dryness and transforms phlegm, clears Heat and resolves toxicity

Dosage and Administration

Oral: decoct in water, 5-10 g. Topical: apply appropriate amount of mashed herb.

Prescriptions

1. For acute and chronic bronchitis: Xian Sheng (fresh root of Adenophora trachelioides, scraped off outer rough bark) 30 g (dried root 9 g), Loquat leaf (Pipaye, de-haired) 15 g. Decoct in water and take orally. (From Zhejiang Folk Commonly Used Herbs) 2. For furuncles: Old Xian Sheng root juice one ge (about 100 ml). Strain the dregs, apply topically. Do not exceed three applications. (From Qianjin Yifang) 3. For boils and carbuncles: Fresh Xian Sheng root, wash clean, chop finely, mix with 10% rapeseed oil to form a paste, then blend in 30% Vaseline. Apply locally, about 0.5 cm thick, fix with a bandage or adhesive tape. Change dressing once daily. (From Zhejiang Medicine, 1960: 46) 4. For Red Star Anise (Shanmuxie) poisoning: Xian Sheng root 15 g, June Snow (Liuyuexue) whole plant 30 g, Mung bean (Lüdou) 30 g, Licorice (Gancao) 6 g. Decoct in water and take orally. (From Zhejiang Folk Commonly Used Herbs) 5. For facial dark spots, reducing scars and removing black moles: Xian Sheng 60 g, Cinnamon heart (Guixin) 0.9 g. Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder and sift. Take 3 g with vinegar water, three times daily. (From Sheng Hui Fang)
